Originally, Les Avants was a farming village situated along the old route taken by merchants and travelers heading toward the Col de Jaman.
Its growth as a tourist destination began in the second half of the 19th century, when the benefits of the high altitude and mountain air attracted an international clientele, particularly from England, France, and Russia. The first Grand Hotel was built there in 1873, marking the beginning of a particularly prosperous period.
During the Belle Époque, Les Avants became a renowned resort for summer vacations and winter sports. Activities at the time included skiing, sledding, bobsledding, and ice skating. The arrival of the Montreux–Bernese Oberland railway line in 1901, followed by the opening of the funicular connecting Les Avants to Sonloup in 1910, contributed significantly to its development and reputation.
